Well, just a few hours to go before the start of our September Eat Local Challenge and we have over 250 people signed up. Amazing! I've spent most of the day preparing for the week to make sure I have some snacks made and meals planned. Also I've spent a lot of time canning tomatoes and salsa for the winter. Today I made a batch of all-local granola using Quebec oats, maple syrup, butter, flax seeds and wheat flakes. No raisins or nuts in this batch but the butter makes it taste extra good! I also made some cornbread using Butterworks Farm's Early Riser Cornmeal, and a cranberry cornmeal cake to bring to a dinner party tomorrow night. I made a batch of yogurt as well and some tomato soup using the extra juice left over from the canned tomatoes and salsa. I also froze some sweet corn and made a corn stock using the cobs which I will use later in the week to make a corn chowder. Yesterday I had a fun day handing out all the localvore Starter Kits at the Farmer's Market (despite the rain) and headed over to the Ketchel's to make cider with some wild apples. The 2 gallons I brought home should help me make it through the week without my standard morning cup of tea.

| Fiddleheads are here!!! I had a wonderful dinner tonight with fiddleheads and garlic sauce along with a goat cheese and pesto omelette. Yum!
If you haven't picked fiddleheads before, look for ostrich ferns as they are just emerging from the ground. They're often found in moist and shady areas, often along stream and river banks. Pick the fiddlheads before the ferns start to leaf out and while the heads are still tight and small. |

| A very exciting moment for those folks here in Vermont who have been working to change the state poultry regulations for small farmers raising chickens. According to Amy Schollenberger of Rural Vermont (who played a key lead role in getting this legislation passed), Thursday we made a huge step forward as the VT House of Representatives passed H.522, the omnibus agriculture bill, with the poultry provisions intact! Late Thursday afternoon, the full House passed this bill with a UNANIMOUS vote of 119-0. |

| Yesterday I arrived home to find an amazing treat that I think is worth sharing with you all... my dear friends e + i who left VT a few years back for graduate school at UC Davis are very intrigued with the whole Localvore project as they're both working on sustainable ag issues at Davis. When I talked with them during the Localvore winter challenge e suggested that maybe we should do a swap, where they would send us some of their homegrown specialties in exchange for the syrup and cheese they missed so much from VT. It was all somewhat vague but imagine my surprise to come home yesterday to find a box full of oranges from the tree in their backyard, and a whole slew of walnuts grown by a farmer down the street. Woo hoo! These are honestly the most flavorful oranges I have had in a long time. Ok, ok, I know they were shipped Priority Mail a few thousand miles across the country, but... an interesting twist anyway on the whole Localvore scene. Now I'm contemplating what to send them in return- what could they not find in CA that we can grow here other than maple syrup?? |

| This morning I made a nice Saturday morning breakfast of waffles with maple syrup and a glass of cider. Then off to school, and I wasn't prepared enough to bring lunch so I headed out to Sweet Pea to grab some lunch. The Localvore takeout options were great- I got some mixed mashed potatoes, parsnips, and carrots with cheddar cheese plus some chevre and an apple. For dinner we made some sweet potato fries, bacon and eggs with some localvore salsa, and carrot beet slaw. A nice relaxing night off from all the Localvore events, and I made some cornmeal cranberry cake.

My highlight for Day 4 was most definitely the soup and storytelling at Mad River Glen. What fun! As far as food goes, nothing too exciting. Oatmeal again for breakfast, chili for lunch, and then a beautiful selection of soups and cornbreads at the Hunger Moon Feast. The scones that Nancy made were fabulous for dessert!

Well, as I write this I can barely keep my eyes open... all these Localvore events are wiping me out! But tonight I took the night "off" to stay home and make soup for the Full Moon Feast and Snowshoe. Not to ruin the surprise or anything, but my contribution to the menu is potato leek soup. Another great example of community support for the Localvore Project-- I called up Helen Whybrow today to see if she had any leeks left, and she left me a bag of potatoes, garlic and leeks for the soup. The potatoes came from George Schenk, who had a bumper crop this year.
Today's menu included bread, butter and honey for breakfast (homemade maple oatmeal bread that came out marginal but edible) with hot cider, my mixed root vegetable soup for lunch (celeriac, potatoes, parsnips and turnips) with an oatmeal cookie and some cheddar cheese on aforementioned bread, and for dinner scalloped potatoes with carrot beet slaw and a swig of Sean Lawson's Localvore Pale Ale. The beer is great- what an addition!
I also stopped by my favorite neighborhood store this morning, the Elm Market and Deli (Elm St, Montpelier), to put up more Localvore store signs. Inspired by the Localvore project, in the past few weeks they have started selling more and more local products including Cabot cheddar, Vermont Butter and Cheese butter, maple syrup from Plainfield VT, Peaslee's Potatoes, Farnum Hill hard ciders, and Maple Meadow eggs. Even in this small convenience store they've been getting comments from customers who are excited about the local options.
